Aperture 3: 4 months on, living with Aperture
Well fortunately for me the last few months has been very busy, unfortunately that has meant my early fervour, excitement and blogging on Aperture 3 suffered. But sitting here at the end of another busy weekend at the end of another hot day (where I can’t quite motivate myself to do the few bits of work I’d wanted to do tonight) I thought I’d post a bit of an Aperture update...

Aperture 3 vs. Aperture 2: STUNNED!! - part 3
Well part three…and I’m stunned…truly stunned :( I’ve just taken the same 130 files into an Aperture 2 library on my MacPro and gone through the same process to get to the same end result which is 130 files with settings and cropped. Aperture 3: 21m+ wait for it… Aperture 2: 13m 16s almost 8 minutes quicker!! I’ll say again I’m stunned!! Aperture 2...
Aperture is worrying me part 2 - with numbers
So after my last post I thought I’d get some numbers behind what I was saying to see how bad the situation is (or isn’t) Did the same tests on the MacPro and the MacBook Pro with the same files. MBP is running SL 130 5DmkII RAW files First processing with my default preset: MBP: 4 mins 12 seconds MP: 6 mins 5 seconds Cropping all photos: MBP: 7 mins 8 seconds MP: 9 mins 2...
Aperture 3 is worrying me :(
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m a huge Aperture fan and I still use the software as the very core of my studio business but over the last few weeks Aperture has started giving me cause for concern :( I can’t be 100% certain but I’m pretty sure that changes made to Aperture since version 3.0 was released have slowly but surely made things slower for me. I never had...

Aperture 3 guides & case studies coming very soon
Sorry it’s been so long since my last Aperture 3 post. It’s been a very hectic few weeks for me and for Aperture. I’ve put it through its paces in the studio and out on a couple of events now as well so I’ve really got to grips with a lot of the new features and more importantly its capabilities. I’m just finishing off two of the bits I had promised and they should...

5 reasons to make your own mind up about Aperture...
The number of websites and blogs seemingly doing battle with all their “5 reasons with Aperture is best”, “5 reasons to switch to Lightroom” etc etc seem to be growing by the day, what’s amusing is that a lot of the people re-tweeting these links and passing on these links probably haven’t used both bits of software and even if they have the reasons for...

Aperture 3: Library Merging (sublime new feature!)...
The new Aperture 3 library management is fantastic, I’ve always used multiple libraries and when I just wanted to take a specific project with me someone I’d previous had to export the project then import it into a new library then export it again and re-import it. It worked just fine apart from the fact that it used up lots of extra space and was cumbersome. With Aperture 3 all of...

Aperture 3: What would you like to know?
I’ve been asked lots of time about my workflow and how I use Aperture 3 so i’m putting together a few quick guides and case studies highlighting how I use Aperture 2/3. The specific areas I’m planning to focus on are: GUIDE: Importing: The new power of the import in Aperture 3 CASE STUDY: Wedding workflow CASE STUDY: Event photography GUIDE: High key white background with...

Aperture 3: Library upgrading and management
The last few days has seen some real problems with people upgrading their Aperture 2 libraries. As with all of the current Aperture 3 problems they seem to strike different people randomly, there doesn’t seem to be any specific combination or hardware or library that seems to be causing the problems. One suggestion is that this is a memory leak in Aperture 3 but that would seem to hit...

Aperture 3: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
One of the things that has become apparent over the first week of Apertures 3’s life is that for some of us lucky ones (me included) Aperture 3 is rock solid and very fast. As usual the happy Aperture 3 users are probably the silent majority whereas those with issues are understandably jumping up and down getting annoyed and very frustrated! Seeing people talking about adjustments taking 20...

Aperture 3: Brushes non-destructive editing at its...
I’m so impressed with the brushes and all the little hidden settings and options that I wanted to share this excitement. The new Aperture 3 brushes are so flexible and powerful that I can’t quite believe what I can achieve, and do it all non-destructively as well! BRUSH IN OR BRUSH AWAY The idea of being able to apply an adjustment that you can then brush in or away is basically...

Aperture 3: Day Two
I started the day happy with Aperture 3’s performance from the day before, I created a brand new library and addd my serial number to Aperture as i purchased the serial online last night (two impatient to wait for the boxed version) A slight side note here, many people don’t seem to realise that you can buy a serial number by clicking on the ‘BUY” button on the Aperture 3...

Aperture 3: Day One
THE PLAN So I took the crazy choice today of diving into Aperture 3 with both feet! The best way of really putting it to the test. I have 7 back to back shoots booked today for a beautiful baby competition (www.mep-photography.co.uk/beautifulbaby) these mini shoots consist of about 20/25 minutes in the studio, a quick download, crop, presets and sorting and then a viewing, the whole process lasts...

Aperture 3 - A rebirth
I wanted to carry across my extreme excitement at the launch of Aperture 3 across to some initial comments and input for anyone that’s interested. I’ve had an intensive play for the last 2 hours with the occasional dip into the manual. My first impression after reading the list of new features was WOW…that has continued into the actual practical use as well. The feature list...

ipaul...ipad...igetit...iwantit
So the ipad has arrived. It’s arrived with the usual response of “meh”…”fail”….”what’s the point”…”OMG it doesn’t do XYZ”…etc etc…The same response we get every single time an Apple product is released. To me the ipad did everything I expected and has achieved it with the usual mix of flair and...

Aperture vs. Lightroom Part 2
My workflows: weddings to white backgrounds I Shoot using Lexar UDMA 300x 8GB cards and use the Lexar FW800 card reader to maximise import speed from the card, It makes a real difference when importing the large 5DmkII files :) (Approximately 53 seconds for 50 5DmkII files) Once I’ve imported the files into one specific project )in the case of the studio work) or multiple projects...

My Aperture workflow
I’ve had a few people recently ask about my Aperture workflow so I thought I’d put it up here to give people an idea, this is the last e-mail I sent out so it’s written as a reply rather than a normal ‘here’s how I work’ piece, I hope people find it useful: > No problem at all, I’ll give you an idea of how I use it (not > necessarily typical) but...
My thoughts on the Apple Tablet
The speculation is reaching fever pitch, bloggers everywhere are stockpiling caffeine and guarding their broadband connections in anticipation of Apples latest “Creation” . the itab, islate, ipad, isketch, itablet, itouch pro whatever it might eventually be called IF its finally announced next week! When the mythical tablet is released, carved from the horn of a unicorn and cooled...

What I do and how I use Aperture: Studio Life
Aperture vs. Lightroom Part 1 The reason I’m starting here is because all too often we see people throwing around statements about X is ‘better’ that Y or faster etc etc and there is nothing objectivity about these statements. I’ve worked with enough designers and photographers to know that one mans fast is another mans slow, and what some of us see as an advantage others...

Aperture vs. Lightroom
December 2009 The Aperture vs. Lightroom debate has heated up in the last few weeks since Adobe released the beta of Lightroom 3. Forums, twitter and the internet is buzzing with “I’m switching to LR3 it’s great” “Aperture is dead” “Lightroom 3 is sooo much better because of x” etc etc You get the idea. Now I have to point out at this stage that I...
Gave the Aperture team some of my thoughts:)
Aperture was one of the final reason I switched to Mac back at the end of 2006. I am a huge fan of the program and often find myself defending it (more and more frequently) on forums and twitter as more and more people become disillusioned with the very slow RAW support and the seeming lack of development compared to Lightroom which seems to be gaining more and more ground (despite being inferior...

Aperture 2 benchmarks
Hopefully Aperture 3 will be upon us (maybe even tomorrow! - wishful thinking) but in the mean time I was wondering whether other Aperture users fancied getting together to establish some benchmarks for Aperture to fins out what difference HDs, graphics cards, processor, RAM etc actually make. I’ve never found anything similar to this for Aperture, lots for Photoshop but nothing for...

The anticipation for Aperture 3 seems to be reaching fever pitch, with big rumor site now posting anything regarding an upcoming release, even vague links to possible pre-order books on Amazon (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/10/23/book_listing_implies_apple_to_release_aperture_x_in_2010.html). There are a few things that are definitely clear from all of this: 1) there is a huge...
Panic over after the Lightroom 3 beta release...
A wave of panic and dread consumed me this morning when I came into work to see that Lightroom 3 beta had been released with no Aperture 3 seemingly anywhere in sight apart from in my hopes :) I nervously downloaded the mac beta version and installed it dreading what I’d find when it launched! But as a self confessed Aperture fan I was pleasantly surprised at what I found, for me it was...
