Panic over after the Lightroom 3 beta release #aperture

A wave of panic and dread consumed me this morning when I came into work to see that Lightroom 3 beta had been released with no Aperture 3 seemingly anywhere in sight apart from in my hopes :) I nervously downloaded the mac beta version and installed it dreading what I’d find when it launched! But as a self confessed Aperture fan I was pleasantly surprised at what I found, for me it was just more of the same from Lightroom which equals more of the stuff I don’t like.

This is in NO WAY an extensive review of the beta as there are no doubt lots of new features and improvements. This is more a huge sigh of relief that Lightroom isn’t providing anything compelling for me to even think about switching. Some of the key points are: 1) Performance - export times and general editing is on a par with Aperture 2, if anything some of the sliders in Lightroom seem a bit sluggish or inaccurate.

2) Modules, modules, modules…I still don’t understand Adobes continuation of this unintuitive rigid approach to workflow that they force upon Lightroom users unlike every other Adobe program, it still feels very ‘un-adobe-like’ in its interface 3) Print packages
I like this feature and would love something like it in Aperture as it would save me doing all my printing from Photoshop.

I was really dreading launching Aperture expecting to find it packed full of new features that I’d want and it being lightening fast compared to Aperture 2, I was so relieved when that wasn’t the case and all the things that I dislike about Lightroom came flooding back :) So for now (and thats the key bit) I will sit here patiently like a good little Aperture fan and hope that Apple are about to surprise us all!

One final thought was that maybe Adobe KNOW, or are expecting the Aperture 3 release thats why the lightroom beta has been released on a random thursday!
