Aperture vs. Lightroom
December 2009 The Aperture vs. Lightroom debate has heated up in the last few weeks since Adobe released the beta of Lightroom 3. Forums, twitter and the internet is buzzing with “I’m switching to LR3 it’s great” “Aperture is dead” “Lightroom 3 is sooo much better because of x” etc etc You get the idea. Now I have to point out at this stage that I am an Aperture fan and an Apple fan, so this might have an effect on my judgement but hopefully the point I’m going to be making from the rest of this is that the vs. debate has FAR more to do with workflow than it does with any brand loyalty..at least thats my excuse and I’m sticking to it!! Now I could turn this into a grand chicken and the egg debate as to whether I have built a workflow around Aperture or whether Aperture suits my workflow, but considering I was taking and processing photos before I started using Macs and Aperture I’m working on the subject that the software suits my needs rather than the other way round. One first point I want to make to set everything up is that comparing AP2 & LR3 side by side I can’t see ANY compelling reason to switch from one to the other. If I’d started with LR then i’d see no reason to go with Ap and vice versa. I’m going to split this little article into 6 main sections which are: 1) What I do and how I use Aperture: Studio Life 2) My workflows: weddings to white backgrounds 3) Likes and dislikes of Lightroom: Adobe vs. Adobe 4) Why Switch?: Fear or facts? 5) The future: The new photoshop? 6) My conclusions: For what they are worth
